In the summer of 2016, he switched from Olympique Marseille to the Blues for almost 40 million euros after the European Championship. His compatriots Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois had previously raved about the club, the city and the stadium. Under new coach Antonio Conte, however, he always remained a substitute and failed to make the breakthrough.
After one and a half years the loan followed to Dortmund and a success story developed from it. Right at his debut in Cologne, he scored twice and prepared another goal. He scored seven goals in ten league games and was thus significantly involved in the Champions League qualification of the BVB. The fans loved him, he quickly developed sympathies for black and yellow – not only because he is fond of Batman and SpongeBob. When the club was desperately looking for a striker in the summer, the most obvious solution seemed to be to buy the Belgian. But that didn’t happen.
