WASHINGTON, DC: A weekend of volleyball and awareness was part of the sixth annual Fragile X Volleyball Classic this past weekend on the campus of St. John’s College High School.
Fragile X Syndrome is the leading cause of mental retardation and autism. Proceeds from the event benefit the Maryland Fragile X Resource Group. The organization supports Fragile X research and supports families that are directly affected. This year’s tournament raised $3,000 to bring the grand total to over $20,000 since the first tournament in 2002.
A child with Fragile X Syndrome has also served as the grand marshal for each tournament. Tyler Gruzin, the son of Mike and Marla Gruzin of Rockville, Md., was this year’s grand marshal.
On the court, St. John’s finished the tournament with a 3-3 record and advanced to the quarterfinals. Peninsula Catholic High School of Newport News, Va. won the tournament with a 3-2 win over defending champion Notre Dame Academy.
St. John’s Shannon Fitzpatrick (Germantown, Md.) was one of eight student-athletes named to the all-tournament team. Fitzpatrick was also a 2005 Fragile X Classic All-Tournament selection. She was joined on the all-tournament team by: Ashley Marchi (Wakefield School), Megan McWhorter (Peninsula Catholic), Heather Redford (St. Gertrude), Regan Simpson (Collegiate School), Becky Tett (Notre Dame Academy), Kelley Vershbow (Maret School) and Paige Wheeler (Cape Henry Collegiate School).
